European Award for Logistics Excellence 2012

Ford Werke GmbH and Penske Logistics win the European Award for Logistics Excellence 2012

25 Million Truck Kilometers Avoided Per Year on European Roads

Enabled by European Logistics Award-winning Concept of Ford and Penske

  • Innovative: ‘Network Integrator’ logistics concept offers one distribution platform for many automotive manufacturers aimed at optimizing the supply chain
  • Efficient: Transport avoidance through intelligent resource utilization
  • Green: More than 10,000 tons or 17 per cent of CO2 reduction per year achieved, based on an assumption of 750,000 shipments annually
  • Customer benefit: Highest service level with reduced CO2 backpack

The European Logistics Association (ELA) honored Penske Logistics and Ford Motor Company with this year’s European Award for Logistics Excellence 2012 award for the innovative Network Integrator concept developed by the two companies. The winning case study submission is a joint project of Ford’s European Customer Service Division (FCSD) and Penske Logistics to optimize spare-parts supply chain enabling collaboration for multiple car brands across Europe. The award ceremony today took place in Kiev, Ukraine.

The Network Integrator concept has been a success story on spare-parts logistics optimization for many years. It’s application has led to savings in transportation of more than 25 million truck kilometers* and a reduction of more than 10,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year, based on an assumption of 750,000 shipments annually, with further potential in the years ahead.

The team behind the concept consists of Ford and Penske logistics experts. Together, they have designed flexible logistics solutions for both the inbound and outbound shipments by integrating the supply chains of participating brands to create a collaborative logistics network.

Simply excellent
«Simply excellent», were the words the jury used to describe the project. «Redesigning a spare-parts supply chain is not an easy task, but combining this with the acquisition of other brands to be included in the logistics network in Europe is a true challenge. This supply chain is particularly complex, due to the high number of unique items to be managed, the heterogeneity of those items, and the extremely short lead times that dealers require. The industry-wide cooperation makes the Network Integrator a state of the art example. This excellent concept produces excellent results in cost reduction, increased customer service and advantages for the planet through deep collaboration. On top of that it delivers several exemplary models for the future.»

The Network Integrator – a joint distribution platform for the entire automotive industry
Spare-parts logistics has become more challenging for the automotive industry due to the increasing number of spare parts as a consequence of increased vehicle complexity. Ford collaborated with Penske Logistics and co-developed the Network Integrator concept into a best-in-industry model in collaboration.

«The Network Integrator concept is part of Ford’s holistic efforts to further reduce the environmental footprint of our products along their entire life-cycle, including the supply chain», said Raymond Damerow, Director Parts Supply and Logistics, Ford European Customer Sales Division.

«Our goal is to continue expanding the concept and encourage other companies of the automotive industry to join the Network, and further leverage economies of scale – to the benefit of each partner participating in the Network and to the environment. Last but not least, the customer benefits as well, as we can provide the highest service level through a stable network also in difficult times.»

«Ford and Penske have worked together globally for years to develop creative and efficient supply chain solutions», said Brian Ruprich, Europe’s Managing Director for Penske Logistics. «The Network Integrator model has evolved into a solid solution that is delivering results and that has exceeded expectations for some time now. It also proves smart solutions can contribute to a greener supply chain at lower costs while maintaining high services level. We are sincerely honored to receive this award, but it would not have been possible without the close, long-term collaboration with the Ford team.»

Also awarded as a finalist in this completion is the company Innofreight with their project Innofold.
Innofold: bulk cargo container for modern logistics in Switzerland, Europe.
Innofold is a rectangular shaped, collapsible container that can be used to transport light to moderately heavy bulk materials (to a max. of 1000kg/m3), both on the rails and on the road. It is either open on the top or equipped with a cover that can be opened for loading and unloading. Innofold is designed to be comfortably collapsed and set up. This mechanism has to maintain its full functionality in all weather conditions.
The jury awarded them because of the unique and innovative aspect of engineering.

With an overall impressive project Geberit GmbH became the third finalist. The jury marked Geberit GmbH as trendsetter in the field of logistics technology standards and their project «The radical restructuring of Group Logistics (added value and customer satisfaction through an integrated strategy)» determined as «high level of innovation» working throughout the worldwide network and example of using logistics as a catalyst for the development of modern successful company.

Global Port Tracker report has optimistic outlook for rest of year and into 2014

By Jeff Berman, Group News Editor
September 06, 2013

The most recent edition of the North Europe Global Port Tracker report produced by maritime consultancy Hackett Associates and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics is pointing to a solid end of the year that they say will pave the way for a “sharp rebound” in North Europe next year.

The report cited multiple reasons for this, including fundamental economic indicators that are starting to head in the right direction, coupled with signs that the is emerging from its recession, following six months of contraction. And it added that some form of a Peak Season is expected but it will be relatively modest as it is calling for North Europe imports to be down 8.8 percent annually, while exports are expected to be down 1.8 percent, due largely to a weak first half of 2013.

“We are starting to see more evidence that companies like Germany and France and others are increasing their trade activity on long-haul routes to and from Asia at the expense of their share of inter-European trade,” said Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett. “If activity in China picks up, there will be more exports from Europe as well. Consumer confidence is also improving in Europe as well and should result in solid growth rates the rest of this year and into next year.”

Ports surveyed in North Europe Global Port Tracker report include the six major container reports in North Europe: le Havre, Antwerp, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam, Bremen/Bremerhaven, and Hamburg.

According to the report, total container volumes across the six port range in June—the most recent month for which data is available— surged 5.4 per cent over May with 3.50 million TEUs, which represents a 3.6 per cent year-on-year increase.

Hackett said that the ocean shipping market, especially in Northern Europe, is likely to see excess capacity over the next four-to-six months, with demand likely to be more in line with capacity growth around next March.

“It is not that excess capacity disappears, instead it is just that it does not get worse,” he noted.

The 24 h Logistics Concept

The 24 h Logistics Concept

Brussels, 5 June 2013

In the presence of Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, former President of European Parliament, Remmers Baustofftechnik GmbH received the European Award for Logistics Excellence 2013.

The jury, chaired by Ádám Kósa, MEP EPP group, nominated nearly unanimously this project as winner. The project in the construction industry provides now deliveries after receiving the order within 24 and 48 hours in 19 countries of Europe wherever the customer is located.  Centralising the order taking function combined with the extension of the time frame, modernising and centralising warehousing and distribution activities to 6 centres as well as automated IT logistics, the winning company gained significant and amazing results.

They doubled the logistic area, with an exceptional high quality production speed of specialties within 2 hours after order reception. With more than 40 % increase of orders customised they have reached 99,4 % delivery rate within 24 hours. Such kind of service level in the construction industry is really close to futuristic. This was the most important driving factor of the jury members nominating this project as the winner of this champions league competition.

Remmers Baustofftechnik GmbH managed very complex needs and problems. This solution is proof for the company to grow continuously in the near future and on.

About the project

“Ordered yesterday, delivered today” – that’s the dream of logistics experts all over the world. Impossible, if orders are customer-specific  and the quality laboratory tested? Remmers AG in Löningen, Germany says: “Yes, we can!” and presented their unique < 24 hour guarantee to astonished specialists. No matter whether a 1-litre can or 2.5 t of restoration render in a special colour. That was and is unique in the building trade in this combination.

The world ticks faster and faster, also at building sites. More and more orders were coming in with a delivery date of “tomorrow”. Such speedy delivery could no longer be guaranteed by the approx. 180 sales warehouses operated by Remmers Baustofftechnik which had organised delivery so far. It was not possible to optimise the degree of service, warehousing and transport logistics in so many warehouses all over Germany. Company management decided that this was an untenable situation and that logistics should become a core competence area in its own right. Dirk Sieverding, Chairman of the Remmers AG Board: “As a premium supplier on the market, we want to deliver our entire line of products in < 24 hours to each customer in Germany.”

An analysis showed that this could only be achieved through consequent centralisation since all processes in the logistics chain, from procurement of raw materials to production, storage and distribution, needed to be optimised.  Implementation of this strategy began by setting up large, highly efficient regional warehouses in Heidelberg and Radeburg as well as pick-up sites as service centres. The parent company in Löningen was expanded, making it the metropolis of the Remmers world. The most visible sign of this is the 17,200 m² Logistics Centre, the central warehouse for all of Europe with approx. 21,000 pallet parking spaces, which was dedicated on November 5, 2011.

The building is the hub of an unprecedented logistics chain. Its integration in the IT landscape of the Remmers group is invisible but extremely efficient. In the world of logistics, information technology is a science of nearly endless potential. It allows orders from all over Europe to be recorded in a web based system which are then forwarded to the warehouses. The system checks stocks, automatically generates production orders, collects raw materials, prepares containers, prints labels, controls warehouse processes and shipment, including route planning.

The use of an integrated IT system makes it possible to automatically process the several thousand orders that come in from customers each day properly and without errors. That also applies to orders for customer-specific special colours. Thanks to an ultra-modern ‘In Can’ special colour facility, Remmers is also able to produce these products in minutes and just-in-time. All orders that are received by 3:00 p.m. are produced the same day, quality tested and loaded for shipment.

Companies in the construction, wood working and floor laying trades who are Remmers customers profit from the unique guarantee given by Remmers Baustofftechnik. With deliveries that fast, even just-in-time at the building site, these companies no longer need to keep large quantities of stocks which can be expensive.
